Some deals and discounts

A quick update while I’m being threatened, yelled at and told I suck at life by some dude on the phone because “the stocks are down” (and I apparently control the global capital markets). I happened upon a couple of nice discounts / deals while perusing my twitter feed and thought I’d share. Most are skincare, shaving and man-creams. You’ll notice that they’re alphabetical given that two of them are still alive in the shaving showdown…

Anthony Logistics: Full-size 5 pack with Glycolic Facial Cleanser, Shave Cream, Ingrown Hair Treatment, Facial Moisturizer SPF 15, Continuous Moisturizing Eye Cream for $90 (normally $130)…awesome deal if you’ll use everything. The shave cream made it through round one of my showdown; I’ve used the moisturizer and it’s nice, while the glycolic facial cleanser is excellent. Can’t speak for the eye cream or the ingrown stuff.

eShave: Free shaving brush with purchase of a full-size “collection” with a 2 ounce oil, 4 ounce cream and 6 ounce after shave soother for $69.  Most other companies sell these full sets for around $100, so this is a great deal. They have the collections available without the brush for $64, but $5 for a badger brush is well worth it. The deal with the brush only comes in orange sandalwood, verbena lime, lavender, white tea and cucumber, so if you want the almond or unscented, you’re out of luck.

Grooming Lounge: Set up an account, get $5 off your first order and $10 off your next. This is a “man spa” in DC. I’ve never been, nor have I ever purchased anything from them. They have their own brand of products (which I’ve obviously never used) that get good ratings on the website, and they carry tons of other brands. I can’t speak for the GL-branded stuff, but pricing on the others looks pretty standard. The $5 discount coupled with the variety make this a good deal.

Lab Series: Free 1.7 ounce post-shave spray with any purchase (no code – automatically adds to your cart)

Zirh: Free Shipping and “Deluxe” samples of Clean (face wash) and Shave Gel with any purchase:

Not grooming related, but a great deal nonetheless, Coastal.com has a free glasses promotion through July 30th with the code FBFREEPAIR. This only works with coupon-eligible frames (i.e. not the really high-end stuff like Tom Ford, Gucci, etc.). If you have your heart set on something not eligible for the free promotion, you can get half-off anything with the code SUMMER through July 31st.

UPDATE!!!

I’ve only done two posts on electronic cigarettes, both focused on Smokeless Image, but I just came across a potentially great deal from another quality vendor that I’ll be talking about at some point (hopefully) soon. The Company is called Vapor4Life, based outside of Chicago. I found them accidentally when I won a facebook contest they were running that gave me two batteries (I ended up ordering a charger and a couple of liquids so they could toss my prize in with the order…they always get you somehow). They’re always running some sort of promo (usually a pretty nice discount, although prices are a little higher than other places), and until tomorrow, they’re doing a wheel of fortune type thing. Enter the code WHEEL7 and you’ll get anywhere between 10% and 45% off your order. I don’t really need anything vape-wise at the moment, but may pop the code in just to see what I can get. Like the good deal hunter I am, a 45% discount might force me to find a few things to buy.

12 Days of Hell…Day 2

So, yesterday was a little rough all around. Work was kind of a nightmare and I was crankier than usual, more likely due to lack of sleep than the diet, but either way, it sucked. I also had a little bit of a cold and couldn’t do my usual shots of day Quil, given the fact that it’s got sugar in it. As awful as the day was, I didn’t give in to the junk food cravings despite the presence of a drawer full of candy over by reception, nor did I give in to my desire for a “real” cigarette (I’m still dying for one, but doing my best to resist. Going to try and finish my first vaping post tonight as a way to keep myself “honest”). I went to the doctor last night too, which helped, and came home to a happy fiance and adorable dog, which also helped…

I had a couple of calls, and only an hour to eat and decompress before they started, so I whipped up a few bunless chicken burgers (just a pinch of spice rub in each), which were outstanding. Had a giant glass of water and treated myself to a fat free, sugar free pudding snack, and it was DELICIOUS. Unfortunately, it was also carby, with 6 grams of sugar alcohol. People doing this routine seem to have mixed reactions to sugar alcohols, so I won’t be indulging in another of these until I’m in ketosis so I can see how they impact me.

I had my calls, did the first semi-final match in the shaving showdown (haven’t given up on that) between eShave and Anthony Logistics, and passed out.

Woke up and felt a lot better than the last couple of days, which improved even further after the future wife made me a scrambled egg (no milk, just a little salt and a lot of black pepper). Inhaled that with a cup of black iced coffee and made a surprisingly non-vile looking lunch (some sliced turkey with raw spinach and broccoli).  Did a quick weigh-in (193.6 – down a pound in 24 hours) and hauled ass to the office. Here’s to a better day!

Shaving Showdown – Match #3

Round 1, match 3 is a rematch of sorts, as Jack and Anthony duke it out again. Last time around, Jack Black’s Triple Cushion Shave Lather defeated Anthony’s budget line, Anthony Sport in a closer contest than I expected, and one that was much closer than their respective prices would’ve suggested. Let’s see how this seemingly more even battle plays out…

In the red corner…

Anthony Logistics for Men Shave Cream

What they say:

Objective:

A shave cream that offers a smooth shave; for the first time in your life, a truly smooth shave.

Strategy:

Lightly coat face with soothing ingredients: eucalyptus oil to heal, squalene to lubricate, aloe vera gel to soothe, an infusion of hops (do not drink) to relax, a bunch of vitamins to nourish – A, B5, C and E.

Method of Use:

Wash face. Apply a thin layer of shave cream. Shave. Rinse off. Follow with Astringent After Shave or Toner.

Why it Works:

Natural moisturizing oils soften and lubricate the beard, helping to provide a close shave. Our shaving products contain no Benzocaine so you can’t over-shave. Shave Cream washes easily off the blade.

What it cost: $16.50 for 6 ounces

What I paid: $25 for a Sephora sampler pack that included 2 ounces of this and a bunch of other things, along with a coupon for a full size of one of the things in the package.

Past experience: In addition to the Anthony Sport, I’ve used their face wash, face scrub, clay mask and just bought a grooming set with nail file, clippers, scissors and tweezers. Overpriced, but a decent little kit.

Smell: Minty, with a hint of licorice and a subtle citrus scent. A decent combination, and although I usually gag from the cell of licorice, it wasn’t overwhelming. The mint was the strongest scent, but everything else blended together nicely.

Lather: In the description, they say it doesn’t foam, and it definitely wasn’t the aerosol-type poof that you’d get with the crappy canned stuff, but it was nice. It was thick and  creamy, but in a good way…a good balance between soapy and lotion-y. It brushed on nicely and felt good on the skin; cool, but not overly so.

Shave: Nice. There was some resistance, but it was just enough to know that the blade was there as opposed to the overly slick feeling I got from the Dermalogica in the last match. It was good, with no discernible negatives…a very solid contender.

Aftermath: The skin felt a little tight, but no pain, redness, bleeding or ingrowns. There was a little dryness, but nothing terrible.

Fiancee: She said this is getting annoying and I need to end the special-ed science project already. I politely requested that she weigh in and she said it looked fine, although I don’t know that she really cared.

Overall: A solid showing. It felt good before, during and after. It was nothing life-changing, but good all around.

And its opponent…

Fighting out of the blue corner…

What they say:

An entirely new way to shave. Unlike traditional shaving foams and gels which can dry out skin, our award winning Beard Lube is a pre-shave oil, shave cream and facial skin treatment in one easy-to-use product specially formulated for men’s shaving needs.

The unique formula contains phospholipids – a rich source of essential fatty acids that are essential to the function of cell membranes – to bind moisture to the skin and support the natural skin barrier. The lightweight, penetrating formula not only helps prepare your beard by penetrating and softening whisker growth, it holds in moisture so your shaving blade glides easily. Refreshes skin, too, for an easier, smoother shave and less razor burn.

The unique see-through texture lets you see where you’re shaving, helping to prevent nicks and cuts–especially great for shaving side burns, moustache and head. Won’t clog your blade, because it’s super light and rinses easily.

What it cost: $16 for 6 ounces

What I paid: $25 for a Sephora sampler pack that included 1 ounce of this and a bunch of other things, along with a coupon for a full size of one of the things in the package.

Past experience: In addition to the shave cream used earlier in round 1, I’ve used their face wash before, and have been using their lip balm for some time now.

Smell: Not that different from the Anthony, actually. The most prominent smell I noticed was mint, which was understandable as it had peppermint, menthol and eucalyptus in it. It has a bunch of other stuff that should be fragrant, but I’m not sure if it is or not, since the mint it the most noticeable.

Lather: They say this is an oil, conditioner and cream in one. Whether that’s true or not, the texture reminded me more of a gel than a cream. It’s clear, with no foam…smooth, more like a lotion than a cream. It was similar in texture to the Dermalogica, but not as greasy and a little thicker.

Shave: It claims to be an oil and cream together, but I wanted apples to apples, so I used my normal regimen and started with a base layer of oil. It was good; close and smooth like the Dermalogica, but not as extreme. The mint was cooling, which was nice, and similar to the Anthony, making it feel a bit more consistent. Smooth, close shave but not overly so.

Aftermath: A little irritation, but nothing terrible. The skin felt fresh right away. There was no dryness here, which I gather is from the “skin treatment.”

Fiancee: Now she’s definitely annoyed, I think I may have to eliminate this part from the next round. She said she couldn’t tell the difference.

Overall: Good, but not great. Definitely a strong contender, but I wasn’t overwhelmed. That said, the recommended usage for this product differed more significantly from my controlled regimen than the others. I may have to give this another shot after the competition, using only as directed.

And the winner is…

Anthony Logistic

This was, by far, the closest of the first round matches thus far. If I hadn’t used the oil and brush with the Jack Black, it’s very possible it could’ve ended differently. They’re both high quality products and certainly both deserving of a chance.

Happy Shaving…
